Project Overview

The aim of the project is to provide maintenance and functional development for the distributed Data Management System (DMS), a licensed product that is built on client–server architecture and performs data management functions in a multi–platform networking environment. The product is widely used throughout the world.

Project Execution

Launched in 1995, the project started with DMS testing in IBM AIX environment performed by IBA. Currently, 20 dedicated IBA experts are involved in the project.

The IBA responsibilities include support and maintenance for the following parts of the system: DMS Backup/Archive Client, DMS Hierarchical Storage Client, DMS for Mail, and DMS for Data Bases:

  • Assistance in the initial processing of Customer Problem Report to identify a software program that causes the problem
  • Analysis of Customer Problem Report relating to DMS, fixing problems in software programs, and testing the programs
  • Development of test scenarios, programming of scripts to automate the testing process, and implementation of functional, system and installation testing
  • Design and development of new functions and features in line with the project plan.

IBA implements the project on a wide range of platforms and operating systems using C++, Java, Perl, and others programming tools. Parallel development across distributed environments is provided with the help of a reliable version control system.

Software Environment and Technologies

  • Platforms: IBM System p, Sun SPARC, HP PA–RISC, HP Itanium, Intel x86, and Apple Mac
  • Operating systems: IBM AIX, Sun Solaris, HP–UX, Linux, MS Windows, Mac OS, and Novell Netware
  • Programming languages: Various C++, Java, and Perl
  • Project communication: Lotus Domino and MS Exchange including build–in facilities for data protection
  • Databases: Oracle and MS SQL including build–in facilities for data protection
  • Configuration Management Version Control system

Project Results

IBA has been providing high quality support for the DMS across the world. Analyzing problems, making appropriate changes in program code, and testing thoroughly the new versions, IBA has contributed to a better quality and reliability of the system. For instance, in the past year IBA performed the following tasks:

  • Analysis and processing of more than 1,000 Customer Problem Reports and fixing problems in DMS functionality and efficiency
  • Development of a number of script programs for test automation and testing of new system versions on supported platforms
  • Expansion of system functionality to meet user needs and expectations in the best way.
